Joan Flanagan Shea: Longtime Pelham Manor Resident

Joan Shea was born on April 4, 1927 to Thomas F. and Louise Flanagan in New York City; the following year the family moved to Pelham Manor and later to Pelhamwood. Mrs. Shea attended Prospect Hill and Colonial Schools, PMHS, Walnut Hill School in Massachusetts and William and Mary College in Virginia.

The Day the Brakes Failed on the Pelham Manor Trolley, Inspiration for the Toonerville Trolley

On a lazy, warm Sunday morning during the summer of 1923, Pelham Manor trolley operator Edward Glazier was operating the Pelham Manor trolley -- the very trolley that inspired internationally-renowned cartoonist Fontaine Fox to create his comic strip "Toonerville Folks" that centered around the dilapidated trolley known as the "Toonerville Trolley." The little trolley car was "laden with passengers" headed for Travers Island and Hunter's Island seeking relief from the summer heat.

In late 1883, a group of Pelham Manor residents and New York City "club men" organized a new "Country Club" in Pelham Manor dedicated to the enjoyment of all "legitimate sports." By 1884, the Club had commenced operations in a 34-acre area between Shore Road and the Long Island Sound with a club headquarters in the Italian Villa-style mansion known as "Oakshade" built some forty years earlier by wealthy New Yorker David Lydig Suydam.

The Model Railroad Once Housed in the Abandoned Pelham Manor Station on the New Haven Branch Line

For a number of years after the New Haven Branch Line stopped running passenger service in December 1937 at the beautiful little Pelham Manor Depot designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert, a model railroading club was permitted to use the empty station. The Westchester Model Club, Inc. built a massive model railroading layout that even included a tiny replica of the very Pelham Manor Depot within which the Club was housed.

Two Relatively Unknown Private Schools in Pelham: The Pelham Manor...

For years I have seen references to a private school that operated in Pelham Manor from about 1917 until about 1935 called "The Pelham Manor Day School" and, occasionally, the "Pelham Day School." The institution was located at 1018 Edgewood Avenue near the intersection with Prospect Avenue and served pupils from kindergarten through the eighth grade.
