The Day the Brakes Failed on the Pelham Manor Trolley, Inspiration for the Toonerville Trolley
On a lazy, warm Sunday morning during the summer of 1923, Pelham Manor trolley operator Edward Glazier was operating the Pelham Manor trolley -- the very trolley that inspired internationally-renowned cartoonist Fontaine Fox to create his comic strip "Toonerville Folks" that centered around the dilapidated trolley known as the "Toonerville Trolley." The little trolley car was "laden with passengers" headed for Travers Island and Hunter's Island seeking relief from the summer heat.

More on the History of the Country Club at Pelham in the 19th Century
In late 1883, a group of Pelham Manor residents and New York City "club men" organized a new "Country Club" in Pelham Manor dedicated to the enjoyment of all "legitimate sports." By 1884, the Club had commenced operations in a 34-acre area between Shore Road and the Long Island Sound with a club headquarters in the Italian Villa-style mansion known as "Oakshade" built some forty years earlier by wealthy New Yorker David Lydig Suydam.

The Model Railroad Once Housed in the Abandoned Pelham Manor Station on the New Haven Branch Line
For a number of years after the New Haven Branch Line stopped running passenger service in December 1937 at the beautiful little Pelham Manor Depot designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert, a model railroading club was permitted to use the empty station. The Westchester Model Club, Inc. built a massive model railroading layout that even included a tiny replica of the very Pelham Manor Depot within which the Club was housed.
